The Plano Lady Wildcats hosted the first district softball games of the 2023 season against the Plano East Lady Panthers, and the Wildcats won both JV and varsity games. The evening was dedicated to Carrie Vega, mother of Plano varsity sophomore player Bella Vega. Carrie lost her fight with cancer in September, and the Lady Panthers joined the Lady Wildcats on the field as a memorial to Carrie was unveiled on the center field fence. The Plano Senior High varsity and JV teams closed out February with tourney play, JV at a home tourney and varsity at the Allen-sponsored tournament. I was able to photograph the JV games against McKinney Boyd (win) and Rock Hill (loss), and the varsity games against LD Bell (win) and Denison (win). The Plano Wildcats football team qualified for the 2022 Texas UIL 6A football playoffs, and for the bi-district round of play drew Prosper, top seed in its district. As top seed at the bi-district level Prosper earned the right to host the game, and on Nov. 11 (a decidedly cold and very windy night) the teams tested each other in the first two quarters, but as the game wore on Prosper’s offense found their way to score and won the match 28-3, ending the football season for the Wildcats. Coppell hosted the Plano Wildcats for the last 2022 regular season game on a Thursday night (changed from Friday due to forecast storms for that day, which came true) and used the home field advantage to the fullest for the win. The silver lining for Plano was learning that the team made the District 6-6A cut for the playoffs. Due to forecast thunderstorms on Friday, the 2022 Plano v. Coppell varsity & JV football games were moved ahead a day, respectively, so Plano hosted the JV games on Wednesday night, Nov. 2. The schools split wins, with the Cowboys winning the JV1 game and the Wildcats dominating the JV2 game. These were the last JV games of the 2022 season for both schools. Plano was the host for the 2022 varsity game between the two schools and weather was a major factor this year. First, the game didn’t start until 8:40p due to repeated safety delays due to lightning. Next, it had been raining almost all day before the game, and almost all the way through the game. Fumbles? Check. Slipped tackles? Check. Finally, the temp hovered around 53 degrees throughout, plus a wind chill. Marcus was able to take advantage of two slippery turnovers and ride the momentum changes to a win. The Flower Mound Jaguars hosted the Plano Wildcats for their 2022 varsity district game and the teams traded touchdowns throughout the game until late in the fourth quarter when a Plano turnover in the red zone gave the Jaguars a chance to break the cycle and take a lead that would hold to the end.
