A cold front blew across North Texas on Oct 23, game day for Coppell at Plano varsity football in Plano’s Clark Stadium. Fans for the JV & 9th grade games played the day before could watch wearing shorts & T-shirts, but coats, stocking hats & gloves were the attire in the stands on Friday night. Plano Wildcats varsity football hosted the Lake Highlands Wildcats for their first home game for the 2020 season on Oct. 9, and it was also the designated Plano Homecoming game and Senior Night game. Due to pandemic mitigation protocols, most of the traditional pageantry was altered or bypassed. The game, however, was fast-paced and full of action, and Wildcats won. But not the brand of Wildcats that Plano fans were cheering for. The 2020 Plano Wildcats varsity football season started with an away game against the McKinney Lions that looked initially to be a lopsided win for McKinney but by the last minute of the game Plano was ahead, only to be denied the comeback win by a kickoff run-back for a TD by McKinney followed by a 2-point play to make it a 1-point Lion win. Plano varsity football’s last game of the 2019 season was on the road, at Prosper’s new (and impressive) stadium. It was a cold November night and the Wildcats offense didn’t warm up until the second half, but by then the Eagles had built up enough of a lead and momentum to finish with a 58-27 home field win. The 2019 Plano vs. McKinney Boyd football game was the last home game of the season for Plano, so it was Senior Night. Coincidentally, it was also Plano’s Homecoming game. Clark Stadium was the venue for the 2019 version of the oldest Plano intra-city football rivalry, and the weather couldn’t have been nicer for the event. This game, and the history of the rivalry, is the subject of a documentary I’m producing, and I was on the sideline with my film crew shooting video, and not stills. McKinney hosted the 2019 season District 9-6A game against Plano on Thursday, Oct 10. With storms in the forecast, kickoff was moved up to 6:00 p.m., but that wasn’t enough to beat Mother Nature. The game was paused for lightning with 11:11 remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter, and after a long delay the teams agreed to finish the game the next day at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats went to bed with a 7 point lead. The 2019 varsity football game between the El Paso Eastwood Troopers and the Plano Wildcats was held on Sept. 5 at the Star Center in Frisco, a first for both teams. Last year the teams suffered lightning delays and rain in Plano’s Clark Stadium; this year, the game was indoors with climate control. Both years, the Wildcats earned a win.
