For a third year the Plano Football program hosted a special event for a dad or family member to take part in putting the identifying stickers on their player’s helmet. This season, Plano Wildcat helmets will feature a special maroon sticker with the initials “JC” in memory of former Plano Football Head Coach and PISD Athletic Director John Clark. Plano Football’s annual Media Day was held on the Plano Senior High campus the early morning of August 12. Starting at 7 a.m. Clark and Vines high schools’ 9th grade teams practiced while the JV & varsity teams had their official team & individual photos taken, then at 9 a.m. the JV and varsity players took the field for intra-team practice scrimmages. On May 18 the Plano Wildcats Football program held its annual Spring Scrimmage at Plano Senior High’s practice fields, and parents and fans were invited to watch from the sideline. The Spring Scrimmage is a showcase for players to demonstrate their skills in hope of landing major roles on the Plano Wildcats teams in the fall. In a year of many adjustments for Texas high school sports, the Plano Wildcats football team wasn’t able to conduct its traditional Maroon & White scrimmage in Clark Stadium in the spring. The alternative played out the morning of Sept. 12, 2020 on PSH’s campus athletic field as prospective JV and varsity squads conducted full-contact, full-tackle intra-team scrimmages Enthusiasm was high and positive among all the players, and from what I (photographing while masked and distanced) could tell no mercy was shown when it came to executing a play against an opposing teammate. Plano varsity football’s last game of the 2019 season was on the road, at Prosper’s new (and impressive) stadium. It was a cold November night and the Wildcats offense didn’t warm up until the second half, but by then the Eagles had built up enough of a lead and momentum to finish with a 58-27 home field win. The 2019 Plano vs. McKinney Boyd football game was the last home game of the season for Plano, so it was Senior Night. Coincidentally, it was also Plano’s Homecoming game. Clark Stadium was the venue for the 2019 version of the oldest Plano intra-city football rivalry, and the weather couldn’t have been nicer for the event. This game, and the history of the rivalry, is the subject of a documentary I’m producing, and I was on the sideline with my film crew shooting video, and not stills. The 2019 varsity football game between the El Paso Eastwood Troopers and the Plano Wildcats was held on Sept. 5 at the Star Center in Frisco, a first for both teams. Last year the teams suffered lightning delays and rain in Plano’s Clark Stadium; this year, the game was indoors with climate control. Both years, the Wildcats earned a win.
