The oldest Plano cross-town sports rivalry continued as the Plano Wildcats football team hosted the Plano East Panthers in John Clark Stadium on Oct. 25. Since both teams had defeated Plano West this year, the unofficial City Championship would be the reward of the evening’s winner, and those bragging rights were earned by the Wildcats 34-24. The 2024 JV football games between Plano and Plano East were played in Tom Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy, Plano East’s “Home” stadium. This year the Plano Wildcats swept the JV series with a JV2 42-0 win and a JV1 28-12 win. The Plano Wildcats JV teams were home on Sept. 21 for the 2023 games vs. the Plano East Panthers, so the games were played at the Wildcats Home stadium, John Clark Stadium. Coming off a bye week for all the District 6-6A teams, both the Wildcats and Panthers had an opportunity to rehab the injured and tune up their plays. Forty years ago the first Plano Senior High vs. Plano East Senior High varsity football game was played, and the Plano Wildcats squeaked past the Plano East Panthers 14-13 for the win. Originally scheduled to play at Tom Kimbrough Stadium, the Plano Wildcats and Plano East Panthers JV football teams met on Sept. 22 at Williams Stadium, the site of the original Plano High School football field. Forty-one years ago Plano East Senior High School fielded its first JV football team, so this venue was a bit throw-back. With the 2020 varsity match-up cancelled due to quarantining, the Plano v. Plano East football rivalry played out between the JV1 & JV2 teams for each school at Kimbrough Stadium on Nov. 19. It was the best of times and the worst of times for each school that night as the Wildcats and Panthers each enjoyed a lopsided win and a lopsided loss. Clark Stadium was the venue for the 2019 version of the oldest Plano intra-city football rivalry, and the weather couldn’t have been nicer for the event. This game, and the history of the rivalry, is the subject of a documentary I’m producing, and I was on the sideline with my film crew shooting video, and not stills. This year’s Wildcats vs. Panthers varsity football game started in the rain, and the rain didn’t end until the close of the half-time break.   Those Wildcats fans who stayed home (and a lot of fans for both teams were no-shows) missed the arguably strongest showing of their team this season.  Holding the Panthers scoreless through the first three quarters, and themselves scoring in all four, the Wildcats earned bragging rights by winning 41-19.
