This year’s Wildcats vs. Panthers varsity football game started in the rain, and the rain didn’t end until the close of the half-time break. Those Wildcats fans who stayed home (and a lot of fans for both teams were no-shows) missed the arguably strongest showing of their team this season. Holding the Panthers scoreless through the first three quarters, and themselves scoring in all four, the Wildcats earned bragging rights by winning 41-19. Another Friday night football game with rain! No lightning delays, thankfully, but starting the game with soaked players, wet footballs and a fraction of the usual number of fans in the stands is not a great experience for any team. For the third week in a row the Plano Wildcats varsity football team had to kill time during lightning delays at the scheduled start time for their game. This week, at Allen High School’s Eagles Stadium, the game started with the Eagles kicking to the Wildcats, but before the Wildcats could set for their first offensive play the game was suspended for lightning. Two hours later, after some sometimes-violent rain showers, play resumed. Though the teams were neck-and-neck through most of the first half, Allen pulled away just before halftime and never looked back, winning 49-14. Lightning delays for a second week in a row? Yep! This time in Garland’s Homer B. Johnson Stadium. And once again, the game started in a steady rain (which faded out by the end of the first quarter). Rowlett and Plano eased into scoring, with neither team on the board until the second quarter. Plano trailed until they tied 17-17 with 3:24 left in the 4th quarter, but Rowlett squeezed in another TD and closed out with a 24-17 win over the Wildcats. The Eastwood Troopers traveled 650 miles from El Paso to play football in Clark Stadium against the Plano Wildcats on Sept. 7 and thanks to lightning delays they almost had a game that spanned two days. As it was, the lightning ended, but the rain continued on-and-off through the night and the game, creating errors, opportunities, and some very interesting photos. The game ended with Plano winning with 72, one of the highest scores in school history. Once again the Plano Wildcats football teams played the Hebron Hawks for their first game of the season, non-district games for JV and varsity. For this 2018 season the Hawks swept the series, besting Plano JV 24-0, and varsity 28-27 in an exact reversal of how last season’s varsity match-up ended. The Mesquite Skeeters traveled to Plano’s Clark Stadium on Friday, Aug. 24 to spend several hours scrimmaging with the Plano Wildcats JV and varsity hopefuls as both teams used unfamiliar opponents to fine-tune their respective rosters for the regular football season that begins the last week of August. The Plano Wildcats football team traveled to the LD Bell High School campus on June 16 for the 2018 Hurst 7 On 7 Football SQT. The Wildcats started cold against Marcus, down 20-7 at the half, but they developed a rhythm in the second half and prevailed 34-27. In the second game, against Midlothian, the Wildcats started off cold again and couldn’t climb out of the halftime hole, ultimately losing 27-13. The Plano Wildcats football team was the sole PISD representative in the 2017 playoffs, and they drew a tough Bi-District round competitor – Euless Trinity. The Trojans enjoyed a home-field advantage on Nov. 17, and maybe that was a factor that helped them defeat the Wildcats in a grind-it-out 21-21 game that went into overtime.
