The Plano Wildcats football program held its annual Spring Maroon & White scrimmage games at Clark Stadium on May 19. The scrimmages featured prospective players for the JV and varsity teams for the Fall 2021 football season, each showcasing his or her (yes, both genders were on the field) talent and skills in hope of getting a leg up for a position on the roster for their team of choice in the Fall. Due to pandemic scheduling the 2020 annual Plano vs. Plano West varsity football game was played later in the year than usual — on December 4. Knit hats, gloves, thick coats and blankets were the fashion in the stands, but the action was hot on the field. The Wildcats lead the first half, but the Wolves caught up by the 4th Q and with less than 2 min on the clock pulled ahead by a touchdown. This year Flower Mound hosted a rare non-playoff early afternoon varsity football game against the Plano Wildcats the day after Thanksgiving. The daylight made it easier to capture photos of the wealth of action on the field, and despite the final score favoring the Jaguars, the Wildcats provided action to the end. Hebron was back at Plano’s Clark Stadium for the 2020 varsity district game and the Wildcats notched their first win of this pandemic year. A cold front blew across North Texas on Oct 23, game day for Coppell at Plano varsity football in Plano’s Clark Stadium. Fans for the JV & 9th grade games played the day before could watch wearing shorts & T-shirts, but coats, stocking hats & gloves were the attire in the stands on Friday night. Plano scored a quick TD in the fist minutes of the game, fell behind by as much at 35-13 by the end of the 3rdQ, but rallied in the 4th to 35-33. Plano Wildcats varsity football hosted the Lake Highlands Wildcats for their first home game for the 2020 season on Oct. 9, and it was also the designated Plano Homecoming game and Senior Night game. Due to pandemic mitigation protocols, most of the traditional pageantry was altered or bypassed. The game, however, was fast-paced and full of action, and Wildcats won. But not the brand of Wildcats that Plano fans were cheering for. The 2020 Plano Wildcats varsity football season started with an away game against the McKinney Lions that looked initially to be a lopsided win for McKinney but by the last minute of the game Plano was ahead, only to be denied the comeback win by a kickoff run-back for a TD by McKinney followed by a 2-point play to make it a 1-point Lion win. In a year of many adjustments for Texas high school sports, the Plano Wildcats football team wasn’t able to conduct its traditional Maroon & White scrimmage in Clark Stadium in the spring. The alternative played out the morning of Sept. 12, 2020 on PSH’s campus athletic field as prospective JV and varsity squads conducted full-contact, full-tackle intra-team scrimmages Enthusiasm was high and positive among all the players, and from what I (photographing while masked and distanced) could tell no mercy was shown when it came to executing a play against an opposing teammate.
