Friday the 13th proved unlucky for me as well as the Plano Wildcats varsity football team in 2023. Although scoring first with a FG, the Wildcats quickly fell behind in the first quarter when the Farmers intercepted for a quick 6, then converted a two-point attempt to go up 8-3. The third Plano Wildcats varsity district game of the season was a home game against the Hebron Hawks. It was a close game until the 4th quarter when Hebron capitalized on two Plano turnovers for unanswered TDs to take a big lead to the end, 34-13. Both teams were coming off losses from the prior week and hungry for a win in this annual intra-city football rivalry. It came down to the last minutes of the game, but the Plano West Wolves captured a narrow lead and hung on for the win this year, 24-21. Bowie hosted Plano’s last 2023 non-district game and what (all hope) will also be the last game played in triple-digit heat. Plano’s defense scored first, but the lead changed hands several times until the game was suspended with 5:43 remaining in the 4th Q due to lightening. Bowie was leading 34-29. Play resumed the next day at 11 a.m., with Plano receiving a kickoff resulting from a safety called against Bowie in the last play the preceding night. The Plano Wildcats varsity team hosted their second game of the 2023 season on the last day of August in John Clark Stadium, against Keller Central. A week before 2023 Texas UIL high school football non-district season play begins, the Plano Wildcats traveled to Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium to conduct JV2, JV1 & varsity scrimmages against Rockwall Heath. It was the first opportunity for players to tune up against unfamiliar players, and for coaches to evaluate players and plays in often unpredictable circumstances. For a third year the Plano Football program hosted a special event for a dad or family member to take part in putting the identifying stickers on their player’s helmet. This season, Plano Wildcat helmets will feature a special maroon sticker with the initials “JC” in memory of former Plano Football Head Coach and PISD Athletic Director John Clark. After affixing the various stickers on their helmets, the players and parents were treated to Little Rome pizza courtesy of the Wildcats Football Booster Club. Plano Football’s annual Media Day was held on the Plano Senior High campus the early morning of August 12. Starting at 7 a.m. Clark and Vines high schools’ 9th grade teams practiced while the JV & varsity teams had their official team & individual photos taken, then at 9 a.m. the JV and varsity players took the field for intra-team practice scrimmages. The Plano Wildcats football program held its first official practice for the 2023 season’s JV and varsity players on August 7 on Plano Senior High’s campus. To avoid the scorching heat of this summer the players and coaches took the field around 7:20 a.m., but the temp was already in the high 80’s. Despite the heat, the practice drills were very up-tempo with a lot of drill rotations. Everyone seemed to be able to keep up the pace – looks like summer conditioning was successful!
