August 12 was the first official day of practice under Texas UIL rules for the Plano Wildcats football team’s varsity and JV players. The Plano Wildcats football teams played against the Coppell Cowboys for the last games of the 2023 season. Coppell hosted the JV games on Nov. 2, and the Cowboys won the JV2 game and the Wildcats won the JV1 game. Plano hosted the varsity game on Nov. 3 and the Cowboys won, advancing to post-season play. Due to forecast prolonged and heavy rain in the area for the night, the Plano at Marcus varsity football game, like many games in the DFW metroplex, had the kickoff time moved up to 5:30pm, and Plano’s band and drill team did not attend for a half-time performance to speed completion of the game. While a cold front blew in for the game, rain did not. The teams and fans went home dry, and Marcus notched a 53-7 win over Plano. It was Senior Recognition Night for the Plano Wildcats as they hosted Flower Mound on Oct. 20 at John Clark Stadium. Plano scored first, but the lead see-sawed through the game, with the Jaguars holding on to a 7 point lead late in the 4th quarter for the win. Friday the 13th proved unlucky for me as well as the Plano Wildcats varsity football team in 2023. Although scoring first with a FG, the Wildcats quickly fell behind in the first quarter when the Farmers intercepted for a quick 6, then converted a two-point attempt to go up 8-3. Lewisville commanded the lead for the rest of the game. The third Plano Wildcats varsity district game of the season was a home game against the Hebron Hawks. It was a close game until the 4th quarter when Hebron capitalized on two Plano turnovers for unanswered TDs to take a big lead to the end, 34-13. Both teams were coming off losses from the prior week and hungry for a win in this annual intra-city football rivalry. It came down to the last minutes of the game, but the Plano West Wolves captured a narrow lead and hung on for the win this year, 24-21. Bowie hosted Plano’s last 2023 non-district game and what (all hope) will also be the last game played in triple-digit heat. Plano’s defense scored first, but the lead changed hands several times until the game was suspended with 5:43 remaining in the 4th Q due to lightening. Bowie was leading 34-29. Play resumed the next day at 11 a.m., with Plano receiving a kickoff resulting from a safety called against Bowie in the last play the preceding night. The Plano Wildcats varsity team hosted their second game of the 2023 season on the last day of August in John Clark Stadium, against Keller Central.
