Incoming 9th graders from Plano’s Clark and Vines High Schools put on jerseys and helmets for the first official day of football practice for the 2025 season the early morning of August 4. Plano Football varsity coaches joined with the 9th grade coaches to start building the foundation for the Plano Wildcats football team at all positions. A little over a week before the first day of school for 2024, the Plano Football 9th grade players held their first official practice at Plano Senior High on Monday, August 5. New this season, all Plano ISD senior high schools will feature 9th graders wearing the colors of their respective feeder senior high schools, and will receive substantial coaching from their senior high coaches. The Plano Wildcats football program held its annual Spring Maroon & White scrimmage games at Clark Stadium on May 19. The scrimmages featured prospective players for the JV and varsity teams for the Fall 2021 football season, each showcasing his or her (yes, both genders were on the field) talent and skills in hope of getting a leg up for a position on the roster for their team of choice in the Fall. The Plano Wildcats Quarterback Club hosted the annual Media Day breakfast on August 19, and the morning event featured a good turnout, good food, good fellowship, introductions and instructions from the QB Club officers, and a concise and heartfelt speech from Head Coach Jaydon McCullough.  Following the program, the players suited up for their official team and individual photos.  Afterward, I enjoyed taking some casual photos of some coaches and their families, a few photos of parents with their player son, and some improvised posed photos of some players. Plano Senior High football’s annual Media Day breakfast was held on August 13th to a packed house.  In a well-received change in format, when Head Coach Jaydon McCullough introduced his coaches, each coach in-turn introduced his family.  To player families new to the program it was a great way to meet the women and children that are the foundation of support for the coaches.  To regular followers of the program it was a great opportunity to see how much the coaches’ kids have grown since the end of last season. The Plano Wildcats varsity 7 On 7 football team qualified to compete in the the 2015 Texas State 7 On 7 Football Championship Tournament at the Plano West SQT on June 6. The Wildcats were undefeated in pool play, besting McKinney 33-14, Denison 33-32, and Frisco Liberty 48-27. In the semi-final game the Wildcats poured it on in the second half to beat Plano East 40-16 and qualify for state.  Plano West was the other finalist, and in lieu of playing the teams turned to best-of-three Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine the SQT champion.  The Wolves won the bragging rights this year. The Plano Wildcats varsity 7 On 7 football team qualified for the State Championship Tournament on Saturday June 7 with wins over Richardson (40-19), Frisco Liberty (32-25), Sachse (21-13) in pool play and Denison (39-26) in the semi-final.  Coincidentally, the host of the SQT, Plano West, defeated Lake Highlands in the other semi-final game, which teed-up Plano and Plano West for the final game. The SQT championship was decided by by an injury-avoiding round of rock-paper-scissors – and the Wildcats won.  Perhaps the teams will actually play each other in the State Championship in College Station on July 11 & 12.
