The 2020 Plano Wildcats varsity football season started with an away game against the McKinney Lions that looked initially to be a lopsided win for McKinney but by the last minute of the game Plano was ahead, only to be denied the comeback win by a kickoff run-back for a TD by McKinney followed by a 2-point play to make it a 1-point Lion win. In a year of many adjustments for Texas high school sports, the Plano Wildcats football team wasn’t able to conduct its traditional Maroon & White scrimmage in Clark Stadium in the spring. The alternative played out the morning of Sept. 12, 2020 on PSH’s campus athletic field as prospective JV and varsity squads conducted full-contact, full-tackle intra-team scrimmages Enthusiasm was high and positive among all the players, and from what I (photographing while masked and distanced) could tell no mercy was shown when it came to executing a play against an opposing teammate. Plano varsity football’s last game of the 2019 season was on the road, at Prosper’s new (and impressive) stadium. It was a cold November night and the Wildcats offense didn’t warm up until the second half, but by then the Eagles had built up enough of a lead and momentum to finish with a 58-27 home field win. The 2019 Plano vs. McKinney Boyd football game was the last home game of the season for Plano, so it was Senior Night. Coincidentally, it was also Plano’s Homecoming game. Clark Stadium was the venue for the 2019 version of the oldest Plano intra-city football rivalry, and the weather couldn’t have been nicer for the event. This game, and the history of the rivalry, is the subject of a documentary I’m producing, and I was on the sideline with my film crew shooting video, and not stills. McKinney hosted the 2019 season District 9-6A game against Plano on Thursday, Oct 10. With storms in the forecast, kickoff was moved up to 6:00 p.m., but that wasn’t enough to beat Mother Nature. The game was paused for lightning with 11:11 remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter, and after a long delay the teams agreed to finish the game the next day at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats went to bed with a 7 point lead. The 2019 varsity football game between the El Paso Eastwood Troopers and the Plano Wildcats was held on Sept. 5 at the Star Center in Frisco, a first for both teams. Last year the teams suffered lightning delays and rain in Plano’s Clark Stadium; this year, the game was indoors with climate control. Both years, the Wildcats earned a win. Mesquite hosted this year’s annual Wildcats v. Skeeters football scrimmage at E.H. Hanby Stadium on Thurs., August 22.
