With McKinney Boyd not fielding a JV team, the first 2019 district game between Plano and Boyd on March 22 would be varsity-only. A short Friday night of softball. Well, not so much. The game turned into a pitching duel with efficient defensive support from the field for both teams. The Plano East Lady Panthers hosted the first round of 2019 softball games with the Plano Lady Wildcats on March 13, in the middle of Plano ISD’s spring break. The teams had been dogged by cold and rain the week before, but by game time the sun was out and the field was in good condition. Plano East won the JV game, and the varsity game finished regulation tied 4-4. In the 8th inning Plano scored 3 and East couldn’t respond, sending the varsity Lady Wildcats home with the win. 2019 softball season district play for the Plano Lady Wildcats softball teams began with away games at Allen on a cold Wednesday night, postponed from an even colder evening the day before. Varsity benefited from the change, reversing traditional order of play and playing first, snagging some welcome warming sunshine. Plano won the varsity game, and Allen took the JV game. March, 2019 came in to Plano like a Yeti from the North Pole, making the March 1 varsity-only softball game between North Richland Hills and Plano a blankets-and-earmuffs-attire-required game for the hearty fans who attended. Temps in the 30’s chilled the batting so much there were no runs until the bottom of the 9th, when the Lady Wildcats were finally able to put a run on the board and end the game. The Plano Lady Wildcats softball team won their way to the 2018 Texas UIL State 6A Semifinal Championship round of play, held June 1 in Austin, Texas, at the University of Texas McCombs Field. The Lady Wildcats faced Humble Atascocita, who bested the Wildcats 4-2, and went on to become the 6A State Champions for this year. It was a one game, winner-take-all night for Plano and Keller for the 2018 Texas UIL 6A Region I championship. Denton Ryan High School provided the spectacular neutral field, and those in attendance witnessed the best of high school softball. The game ended after the top of the 7th when home team Plano quickly put three outs on the scoreboard and sealed the 2-1 win. Plano swept the best-of-three game playoff series against Odessa Permian by winning the second game on May 18. The Lady Wildcats came out swinging and connecting in the top of first inning, took the lead, and never looked back on the way to the 12-5 finish.
